When people tell me that I am doing a good job with my business, I cringe a little. I always say thank you, but in my mind, “now what if I put my whole ass in this?”
Because honestly? Most days it feels like I am running this small biz on vibe checks, double-shot lattes, and a to-do list that never seems to end.
Now just because I am declaring I “half ass” my business, don’t think I don’t care. Because it’s quite the opposite. I care a lot.
I think it’s just who I am.
Side story time, but make it relevant: when I was in high school, I hardly ever read the assigned readings without the Cliff Notes. But senior year, I read The Catcher in the Rye, cover to cover, without cliff notes. Then we were assigned to write a research paper and do this group project. I worked so damn hard on it. I remember going to the library and doing book research. I didn’t wait until the night before. I actually tried. And guess what?! I did so well on that entire assignment!!! And I know it was because I put my all into it… I was an okay student in high school. And I am sure I said “now what I put all of this effort into all of my school work…?”
So like I said, it is who I am.
🩵 There’s always something half finished…
🩷 Something I meant to schedule (this week it was a TikTok that I filmed and edited 🙃)...
💚 Some system I swear I’ll “get to next week…”
My brain’s basically a messy desktop with every single window open, trying to remember what I was supposed to be doing.
Recently (and I mean this morning), I was talking with some friends about writing this exact blog post. One of them said:
“As an outsider, it looks like you’re busting your ass and have a good balance: running a blooming business and still enjoying life.”
Which is truly so nice to hear.
But am I some kind of magician? Giving off the illusion that I am busting my ass? Because from where I am sitting, I am trying really hard not to grab my phone to doom scroll (which I can't because of the Brick!)
Maybe they are right. Maybe it’s not that I’m half-assing things but I am learning to be efficient. Or maybe it’s imposter syndrome creeping in and asking me “why aren’t you at the same level as so and so over there?”
As the conversation continued, they also said:
“Or you’ve mastered how to be efficient with your time. Which comes with experience and time.”
Which is 100% fair. Because every time I do something productive, I see results.
I’ll be whining about not getting sales, and then I realize I haven’t sent an email or posted on social media. Just this week, I sent out a wholesale email, which resulted in a massive order! 252 Post-It Notes to be exact!
I feel like the universe was telling me, “See what happens….”
I have been tired of saying “what if I stopped half-assing things?” and finally decided to do something about it.
I have this whiteboard in my office that I like to jot things on. Last week I made a list:

Dun dun dun… OPERATION: WHOLE ASS da BIZ was started.
This isn’t about working more but being efficient. And obviously, this is something I am going to have to learn and be kind to myself about. Not everything is going to get done. It’s not about perfection. It’s about follow-thru.
That’s why I have “get 2 non-negotiables done a day” on the list. It might be something else from this list or something that came up (like a big wholesale order!)
Whatever it may be that day, I know it’s going to move the business forward in a way I want it to move forward and not doomscrolling.
Drop in the comments some of your tasks that you like to get done to help with your business.
& if you are still here, cheers to focus, effort, and definitely a little bit of unorganization. But only with our whole butts.
